U.P. 200 – Sled Dog Race

While some of us avoid the cold and stay indoors when it snows, for our friends up north in Michigan, the snow signals one of the biggest events of the year: the U.P. 200. This sled dog race takes place each February, with a challenging trail running from Marquette to Grand Marais, Michigan. Spanning over 220 miles, the race tests both the mushers (driver of the sled dogs) and their teams of dogs. Top finishers not only earn monetary prizes but also secure a spot in the prestigious Iditarod race. After two years off of the race due to weather issues in 2023 and 2024, 2025 proved to be the year it came back with fresh snow coming down in the days leading up to the event.

The demanding course requires several checkpoints along the way, one of which is at our very own Timber Products Munising mill. Here, we serve as an assisted checkpoint where the teams receive veterinary care and can take a well-deserved break. For years, our mill has been proud to host this stop, offering shelter to the dogs and mushers, before they continue on their journey. While we welcome the sled teams and support staff, please note that spectators are not allowed on Timber Products property during this time to allow for the dogs and mushers to rest.

After leaving Timber Products, the teams head to Grand Marais and rest at the local Community Center before making their way back to Marquette. On the return leg, they rest again at Timber Products. Next year, if you find yourself in Marquette during the start of the race, downtown offers a great opportunity to see the dogs race by, along with other activities like the silent auction and ‘Warm-Up’ parties.

Congratulations to everyone who crossed the finish line in this year’s U.P. 200! We are proud to be a part of such an exciting and historic event.
